Form I-407 records that a lawful permanent resident is voluntarily giving up that status. By signing it, the person waives the right to a hearing before an immigration judge on whether they abandoned their status. It is also used to document an abandonment that already happened.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending documents USCIS did not issue, such as a driver's license or Social Security card. Return only USCIS documents.
- Not returning the green card, reentry permit, or refugee travel document without explaining why.
- Writing a different name in Item 3 than the one printed on the card.
- Using fewer than 9 digits for the A-Number.
- A parent signing for a minor without proof of the parental relationship or guardianship.
- Not considering tax effects. USCIS says it shares the filer's name and filing date with the IRS and points to IRS expatriation tax guidance.
- Not signing the form, or using a typed, stamped, or pasted image signature. USCIS rejects improperly signed forms.
