Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving out the family name, mailing address, or date of birth in Part 1. USCIS says it will reject the form if these are missing.
  • Forgetting to sign the form. USCIS rejects unsigned forms.
  • Choosing reason 'card expired or will expire within 6 months' when the card still has more than 6 months left. The instructions say this may lead to denial.
  • Choosing 'card issued but never received' when the card was mailed to your address and not returned to USCIS. In that case the instructions say to use the lost, stolen, or destroyed reason.
  • Conditional residents using I-90 when the 2 year card is expiring within 90 days. They need Form I-751 or I-829 instead.
  • Mixing pages from different form editions. USCIS may reject the form.
  • Giving a foreign mailing address. USCIS mails the card only to a U.S. address, except for some commuter cases.
  • Sending the original card when only a copy is needed. Only the DHS error reason asks for the original card.

Questions about Form I-90

Can I file Form I-90 online?

Yes. USCIS lets you file I-90 online through a USCIS online account, or by mail on paper. The online fee listed on G-1055 is lower than the paper fee.

How early can I renew my Green Card?

You can use the expiring card reason when your card has expired or will expire within the next 6 months.

What proves my status while my renewal is pending?

USCIS says the I-90 receipt notice for a renewal, together with your expired card, is evidence of permanent resident status for 36 months from the card's expiration date.

Do I need to file I-90 when my child turns 14?

Yes, the instructions say a permanent resident must register within 30 days after turning 14 by filing Form I-90. The fee depends on whether the current card expires before or after the 16th birthday.

Should I file I-90 or apply for citizenship?

USCIS suggests checking your naturalization eligibility before filing I-90. Applying for naturalization does not remove the duty to carry a valid card.

Will I need a biometrics appointment?

USCIS may schedule a biometrics appointment to take fingerprints, a photo, and a signature. If you miss it, USCIS may deny the application.
