Common mistakes to avoid

  • Copying the VIN or hull number wrong. Check it against the title and the vehicle.
  • Leaving the selling price blank when it was a sale, or putting a price on a gift instead of the gift value and relationship.
  • Only one of two sellers signing when there are two sellers named.
  • Forgetting the DL, ID or dealer number next to the seller's signature.
  • Thinking the bill of sale replaces the title transfer. The DMV still needs the title and the transfer reported.
  • Forgetting the separate Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability, which the DMV says sellers must submit within 5 days.
  • Not keeping the lower copy. The form says to cut on the line and save it for your records.

Questions about REG 135

Does a California bill of sale need to be notarized?

REG 135 has no notary section. The seller signs a statement under penalty of perjury instead. The DMV page we checked mentions notarization only for another form, REG 227. Rules vary by situation, so check the official DMV guidance for your case.

Is REG 135 the same as the release of liability?

No. REG 135 records the sale between seller and buyer. The Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) is a separate notice the seller sends to the DMV within 5 days.

Can I use REG 135 for a boat?

Yes. The form covers a vehicle or a vessel, with a box for the identification number and the CF number.

What if I gave the car as a gift?

Fill in the gift value and the relationship, for example parent, spouse or friend, on the gift line instead of a selling price.

Why are there two copies on one page?

The page has the same bill of sale twice. The form says to cut on the line and save one copy for your records.
