Common mistakes to avoid

  • Leaving item 19 blank. The form says VA may not be able to set an effective date without a benefit selected.
  • Treating the form as the claim. The form says it is not a claim and a complete application must follow.
  • Waiting more than a year to file the full application, which loses the earlier date.
  • Leaving out details VA needs to identify you. The form says VA cannot process it if it cannot identify the claimant or veteran.
  • Checking the survivors box when you are the veteran. That box is only for surviving dependents.
  • Filing a paper form when you already started an online disability claim with a verified account. VA says that sets the intent to file automatically.
