Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving off your signature, name or address. The application start date is the date DSS gets an application with all three.
- Waiting to collect every document before applying. The form and NCDHHS say not to delay; you can turn in proof later and benefits start from the day you apply.
- Skipping the expedited benefits questions on page 2. They decide if you can get help within 7 days.
- Leaving out bills. The form says expenses you do not tell DSS about or verify may not be used to figure your benefits.
- Missing the interview. The form says a caseworker must interview you or someone you choose to represent you.
- Using an old copy. Get the current edition, Rev. 10-2026, from the NCDHHS policies site.
