Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using T1213 to reduce the OAS recovery tax. The form says to use Form T1213(OAS) for that instead.
  • Sending the form while earlier returns are not filed or assessed, or while a balance is still owing.
  • Leaving out supporting documents. Each line in Part 3 lists what to attach, and the form warns that incomplete forms may delay processing.
  • Including RRSP contributions that your employer already deducts from your pay on line 1.
  • Assuming one approval covers future years. The form says the request must be made every year, with a two-year option only for support payments that stay the same or go up.
  • Forgetting line 12 when you also have interest, rental or self-employment income with no tax taken off.
  • Sending original receipts. The form says to send copies and keep the originals.
