Form TD1 in short
Form TD1 is the federal Personal Tax Credits Return. Employees and pension recipients give it to their employer or payer, who uses the total claim amount to work out how much federal income tax to deduct from each payment. Most people also fill in a provincial or territorial TD1 at the same time.
| Issued by | Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) |
|---|---|
| Current version | 2026 version (checked 2026-10-25) |
| Who fills it in | An employee or other individual who starts with a new employer or payer, wants to change the amounts they claimed before, wants to claim the deduction for living in a prescribed zone, or wants more tax deducted at source. You do not need a new TD1 every year unless your tax credits change. |
| Who receives it | Your employer or payer. The form says to sign it and give it to them. |
| Where to send it | Give it to your employer or payer, not to the CRA. The CRA tells employers to keep completed TD1 forms in their records and not send them to the CRA. |
| Deadline | Give it when you start work or begin receiving payments. The CRA says employees should give a new TD1 within 7 days of a change that could reasonably change their personal tax credits for the year. If you do not give one, deductions are based only on the basic personal amount. |

What changed
This is the 2026 version, used for pay received on January 1, 2026 or later. The dollar amounts change each year. For 2026 the federal basic personal amount on line 1 is $16,452. Use the TD1 for the year you are paid, not an older one.
How to fill out Form TD1, line by line
| Identification | Name, date of birth, employee number, address, SIN Your last name, first name, date of birth (YYYY/MM/DD), employee number if you have one, address, postal code and social insurance number. Non-residents also enter their country of permanent residence. |
| Line 1 | Basic personal amount Every resident of Canada can enter $16,452 for 2026. If your net income will be more than $181,440, you can work out a smaller partial claim using Form TD1-WS. |
| Line 2 | Canada caregiver amount for infirm children under age 18 $2,740 for each infirm child born in 2009 or later who lives with both parents all year. Only one parent may claim it. |
| Line 3 | Age amount If you will be 65 or older on December 31, 2026, and your net income will be $46,432 or less, enter $9,208. A partial amount applies for income between $46,432 and $107,819 (use Form TD1-WS). |
| Line 4 | Pension income amount If you get regular pension payments (not CPP, QPP, OAS or GIS), enter $2,000 or your estimated annual pension income, whichever is less. |
| Line 5 | Tuition (full-time and part-time) If you are a student and will pay more than $100 per institution in tuition fees, enter the total tuition fees you will pay. |
| Line 6 | Disability amount If you will claim the disability amount on your tax return using Form T2201, enter $10,341. |
| Line 7 | Spouse or common-law partner amount The difference between line 1 (plus $2,740 if your partner is infirm) and your partner's estimated net income, when you support a partner who lives with you and has lower income. Go to line 9 instead if your partner is infirm with net income of $29,374 or less. |
| Line 8 | Amount for an eligible dependant For people without a spouse or partner they live with or support, who support a related dependant living with them. Enter the difference between line 1 (plus $2,740 if infirm) and the dependant's estimated net income. |
| Lines 9 and 10 | Canada caregiver amounts for people 18 or older For supporting an infirm spouse, partner or dependant aged 18 or older with low net income. Line 10 is $8,773 if their net income will be $20,601 or less. Use Form TD1-WS for partial amounts. |
| Lines 11 and 12 | Amounts transferred Unused age, pension, tuition or disability amounts transferred from your spouse or partner (line 11), or unused disability or tuition amounts from a dependant (line 12). |
| Line 13 | Total claim amount Add lines 1 to 12. Your employer or payer uses this to set your tax deductions. Enter 0 if you already claimed credits with another employer or you are a non-resident who does not qualify. |
| Page 2 | Deduction for living in a prescribed zone For people living in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon or another prescribed northern zone for more than six months in a row: $11.00 a day, or $22.00 a day if you maintain a dwelling and are the only one in it claiming. Intermediate zones get 50%. |
| Page 2 | Additional tax to be deducted Optional. The extra amount you want taken off each payment, for example if you also get CPP, QPP or OAS income. |
| Page 2 | Certification Sign and date the form. The form states: 'It is a serious offence to make a false return.' |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Claiming the basic personal amount with two employers at the same time. If you already claimed credits on another 2026 TD1, check the box on page 2 and enter 0 on line 13.
- Forgetting the provincial or territorial TD1. The form says you also need one if your line 13 total is more than $16,452.
- Using the TD1 for the wrong province. Employees use the form for their province or territory of employment; pensioners use the one for where they live.
- Using an old year's TD1. Amounts change each year, so use the 2026 form for 2026 pay.
- Sending the form to the CRA. It goes to your employer or payer, who keeps it.
- Not updating the form after a change, such as a new dependant. The CRA says to give a new one within 7 days of the change.
- Leaving the form unsigned. The certification on page 2 needs a signature and date.
- Non-residents claiming credits when less than 90% of their world income is taxable in Canada. The form says to enter 0 on line 13 in that case.
Questions about Form TD1
Do I have to fill out a TD1 every year?
No. The CRA says you do not need a new TD1 each year unless your personal tax credit amounts change. You fill one out when you start with a new employer or payer, or when your situation changes.
What happens if I do not give my employer a TD1?
Your employer will deduct tax using only the basic personal amount. You will not get credit at source for other amounts you could claim, such as the age or disability amount.
Do I also need a provincial TD1?
Yes, if your federal claim on line 13 is more than $16,452. There is a separate 2026 TD1 for each province and territory except Quebec, such as TD1ON or TD1BC. In Quebec, the CRA says employees use the federal TD1 and Revenu Québec's form TP-1015.3-V.
I have two jobs. Can I claim the basic personal amount at both?
No. If you already claimed credits on another 2026 TD1, check the box for more than one employer or payer and enter 0 on line 13 for the second job.
Can I ask for more tax to be taken off my pay?
Yes. Enter the extra amount per payment under 'Additional tax to be deducted' on page 2. You can change it later by giving a new TD1.
Can I use a TD1 to reduce tax for RRSP contributions?
Not directly. For deductions not on the TD1, such as RRSP contributions you make yourself, the form says to use Form T1213 to ask the CRA for a letter of authority and give that letter to your employer.
