Common mistakes to avoid
- Filing one Form 4562 for several businesses. A separate form is needed for each business or activity that requires one.
- Completing Part I more than once when you have several businesses. Only one Part I is completed in full to figure the section 179 deduction.
- Taking a section 179 deduction larger than business income allows, instead of carrying the excess to line 13.
- Leaving vehicles out of Part V and claiming them only on line 19.
- Claiming business use of a vehicle without records. Line 24a asks whether you have evidence to support the business use claimed.
- Using the wrong year's form. Lines change each year, such as the new 2025 lines 19h, 20e, 23a, 23b and 24c.
- Using Form 4562 for the energy efficient commercial buildings deduction. That goes on Form 7205.
