Form N1 in short
Form N1 is the paper claim form used to start a court claim in England and Wales under Part 7 of the Civil Procedure Rules, most often to claim money a person or business owes you. gov.uk says you can claim online in many cases, but you must use the paper N1 in some situations, for example if you do not know the exact amount or are claiming against 3 or more defendants.

| Current version | N1 Claim form (CPR Part 7) (10.26) (checked 2026-10-25) |
| Who fills it in | The claimant, meaning the person or business making the claim, or their legal representative. A litigation friend signs for a claimant who is a child or protected party. |
| Who receives it | The court. For money claims, the N1A notes and gov.uk say to send it to the Civil National Business Centre. The court then serves the claim on the defendant, who must respond. |
| Where to send it | Money claims: Civil National Business Centre, St Katharine's House, 21-27 St Katharine's Street, Northampton, NN1 2LH. The N1A notes say High Court claims and claims for something other than money go to a court office. |
| Deadline | Not stated on the form or in the gov.uk guide. |
| Fee | Based on the amount claimed plus interest (EX50, fees order 1.1): up to £300 is £35; £300.01 to £500 is £50; £500.01 to £1,000 is £70; £1,000.01 to £1,500 is £80; £1,500.01 to £3,000 is £115; £3,000.01 to £5,000 is £205; £5,000.01 to £10,000 is £455; £10,000.01 to £200,000 is 5% of the claim; over £200,000 is £10,000. gov.uk says if you leave the amount claimed blank the fee is £10,000. Help with fees may be available. |

What changed
gov.uk updated the N1 on 23 October 2026 to include the defendant's email address on the first page. The current version is dated 10.26.
How to fill out Form N1, line by line
| Page 1, heading | In the (court name), fee account and Help with Fees reference Name the court where the claim should be issued. The N1A notes say a money only claim in the County Court should name the County Court Money Claims Centre. Add your Help with Fees reference (HWF) if you have one. |
| Page 1 | Claimant(s) and defendant(s) names and addresses Full names and addresses with postcodes. The N1A notes explain how to name a sole trader, a firm, a company or a child. A postcode is needed for the defendant unless a judge gives permission. |
| Page 1 | Defendant(s) email address(es) New in the 10.26 version. Give the defendant's email address if you know it. |
| Page 1 | Brief details of claim and Value A short statement of what the claim is about and what you want. For a fixed amount, put it in Amount claimed. For an unspecified amount, write the value band from the N1A notes, such as 'I expect to recover not more than £10,000'. |
| Page 1, bottom | Amount claimed, court fee, legal representative's costs, total Add up the amount claimed, the court fee and any fixed legal costs. Legal costs can only be claimed if a legal representative made the claim for you. |
| Page 2 | Preferred hearing centre, vulnerability and Human Rights Act Name your preferred County Court hearing centre. Say whether you or a witness are vulnerable and what support you need, and whether the claim raises Human Rights Act 1998 issues. |
| Page 3 | Particulars of Claim Write the facts you rely on and any interest you claim, or tick attached or to follow. |
| Page 4 | Statement of truth Tick who is signing (claimant, litigation friend or legal representative), sign, date and print your name. A false statement can lead to proceedings for contempt of court. |
| Page 5 | Address for documents Your address, phone, DX and email for the court to send documents. The form says an email address is encouraged but not required. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the paper form when the online service would be cheaper or quicker. The form suggests checking moneyclaims.service.gov.uk first.
- Leaving the amount claimed blank when you know it. gov.uk says the fee is then £10,000.
- Missing the defendant's postcode. The N1A notes say the court will not serve the claim without it unless a judge allows it.
- Naming the defendant wrongly, for example not adding 'Ltd' for a company or 'trading as' for a sole trader.
- Not sending enough copies. The N1A notes say keep one copy, send one for the court and one for each defendant.
- Not signing the statement of truth.
- Forgetting to include interest in the claim and in the fee calculation.
Questions about Form N1
Can I still use the paper N1 or must I claim online?
You can still claim by post with the N1. gov.uk says you can claim online unless, for example, you do not know how much to claim, you claim for more than one person, the claim is against 3 or more people, someone has no address in England or Wales, or the claim is against a government department.
How much does it cost to file an N1?
It depends on the amount claimed, from £35 for up to £300 to £455 for £5,000.01 to £10,000, then 5% of the claim up to £200,000. Check the current EX50 fee list before you pay.
How do I pay the fee with a paper claim?
gov.uk says you can send a cheque or postal order payable to 'HM Courts and Tribunals Service', or send a letter asking to pay by card with your phone number and a good time to call.
Can I get help with the court fee?
You may get help with fees on a low income or certain benefits. If you apply for help by post, gov.uk says to make the court claim by post too and send both forms together.
What happens after I send the N1?
The claim is sent to the defendant, who must respond. If they dispute a claim of £10,000 or less, gov.uk says you will be told you must attend free mediation.
Does the N1 work in Scotland or Northern Ireland?
No. gov.uk says there is a different process to make a court claim in Scotland and in Northern Ireland.
